The one thing I hear a lot of when I’m photographing professional business people is “I don’t like smiling in photos”. That’s fine but a smile portrays friendliness and approachability. The more approachable you are, the more likely people are to do business with you. If they see a smiley happy face on your LinkedIn profile, your website or any of your social media pages, then there’s more of a chance they’ll connect as opposed to someone who looks upset (or better still, doesn’t even have a headshot on their profile!). Think of your own experiences when dealing with a service. If the person that you have dealt with looks like they don’t want to be there, how likely are you to go back or to recommend that person or service to someone else? A classic example is going to the supermarket and being served at the checkout, everyone tends to judge the whole experience they have at a supermarket based on how they’re treated when they are leaving. If the person at the checkout is smiling and happy, you leave there happy. If the person is grumpy, you leave thinking negative thoughts about the place. See the difference now? So why should people look at you any different if what they see in your corporate portrait is someone that doesn’t really want to be there as opposed to the person that’s smiling and approachable? Think of how your clients, and potential clients, are seeing you the next time you have your photos taken. Yes I know, you’re not a model and you don’t like having your photo taken BUT, put that all aside and think differently for 20 minutes and see the difference. So the next time you come in for your headshots to be taken, rather than thinking “I don’t like smiling in my photos” think of something that makes you smile! Think of your children, your spouse, your pet…whatever…but just smile!
